🏛️ Court Guide ·

Bulandshahr District Court me kaunsi court kis kaam ki hai, pehli baar court jaane par kya saath le jayein, aur aaj court khula hai ya nahi — sab ek jagah. Judges ke naam isliye nahi diye gaye hain kyunki posting badalti rehti hai; aaj kaun kis court me baitha hai, ye live causelist se dekhein.

Aaj ki sthiti load ho rahi hai… /

Kaunsi court kis kaam ki ·

District & Sessions Judge: sessions trial (hatya, balatkar, dakaiti jaise gambhir apraadh), magistrate ke faislon par appeal aur revision.

Addl. District & Sessions Judges: sessions trial aur civil appeal, jaise kaam baanta jaye. /

Chief Judicial Magistrate / Judicial Magistrates: aapradhik trial, remand, zamaanat, aur cases ko sessions court ko bhejna (committal).

Civil Judge (Senior / Junior Division): diwani mukadme, apni seema ke andar. /

Family Court (Principal Judge + Addl. Principal Judge): talak, bhatta, bachchon ki abhiraksha, vaivahik adhikaaron ki punarsthapna.

Special Judges: POCSO Act ke mamle (bachchon ke prati yaun apraadh) aur EC Act (avasheyak vastu adhiniyam) ke mamle alag special courts me.

Outlying courts: Khurja aur Anoopshahr ·

Bulandshahr judgeship ke outlying courts Khurja aur Anoopshahr me baithte hain — in ilakon ke mamle wahin ki अदालतों me chalte hain.

Pehli baar court ja rahe hain ·

Saath le jayein: pehchan-patra (Aadhaar/voter ID), apne case ke kagaz, CNR number ya filing receipt, aur pichhli tareekh ka order (agar ho).

Samay par pahunchein, apni court ka kamra aur court number causelist se pehle dekh lein, aur apne vakil ka number phone me rakhein.

Kaam ke din aur chhuttiyan ·

Iske alawa gazetted chhuttiyan, sthaniya chhuttiyan (District Judge dwara ghoshit) aur High Court ke beech saal ke adeshon se bhi chhuttiyan badal sakti hain — isliye kisi khaas tareekh ke liye us din ki causelist hi antim pushti hai.

Arrest: Know Your Rights ·

When it applies: When the police arrest you, or take you into custody, in any criminal case. /

  1. Ask, politely and clearly, for the grounds of your arrest in writing. Under BNSS 47, a person arrested must be informed of the grounds of arrest and of the right to bail.
  2. Tell the police the name of a family member, friend or lawyer you want informed, and note the time of arrest and the names of the officers present.
  3. You have the right to consult a lawyer of your choice (Constitution, Article 22). Do not sign any paper you have not read and understood.
  4. If the police want you to appear without arresting you, they may give a notice of appearance under BNSS 35(3). Keep that notice safe and appear on the date given.
  5. You cannot be kept in police custody beyond 24 hours without being produced before a Magistrate (BNSS 58). Count the hours from the time of arrest.
  6. If you are hurt, or were hurt during arrest, ask for a medical examination. BNSS 53 covers examination of an arrested person by a medical officer.
  7. Stay calm, do not resist physically, and note everything afterwards in writing while it is fresh — dates, times, places and what was said.

Bail: What to Do, Step by Step ·

When it applies: When you, or someone you know, is arrested or faces arrest in a criminal case and release from custody is sought.

  1. First find out whether the offence is bailable or non-bailable. In bailable offences, bail is to be taken (BNSS 478); in non-bailable offences, bail is sought from the court (BNSS 480).
  2. Keep ready: the FIR or arrest memo copy, identity proof, address proof, and the names of two sureties if the court asks for them. Do not promise a surety you cannot arrange.
  3. Your lawyer files the bail application in the court that has jurisdiction, stating the facts, the stage of investigation, and why custody is no longer needed.
  4. If the police have not completed investigation within the time the law allows, default bail may arise — this is part of the remand procedure in BNSS 187. Ask your lawyer whether it applies in your case; do not assume the date yourself.
  5. If bail is granted, read every condition carefully — court dates, travel limits, and surety or bond requirements — and follow them exactly. Breaking a condition can lead to cancellation.
  6. For arrest that has not yet happened, anticipatory bail is a separate application under BNSS 482, made to the Court of Session or the High Court. Regular bail and anticipatory bail are not the same application.

FIR: How to Get It Registered Correctly · FIR:

When it applies: When a cognizable offence — a serious offence the police can investigate without a court's order — has happened to you or someone you know.

  1. Write down, before you go, what happened in order: date, time, place, who was involved, and what was taken or damaged. Take any photos, messages or papers that support it.
  2. Go to the police station and give the information for an FIR under BNSS 173, which covers information in cognizable cases. Give facts only; do not add guesses as if they were facts.
  3. Read the FIR before you sign it. If anything is wrong or missing, ask for it to be corrected first. Keep a free copy of the FIR — always take it with you when you leave.
  4. Note the FIR number, the police station, the date, and the name of the officer who recorded it. You will need these for every later step.
  5. If the offence is non-cognizable, the police record it differently, under BNSS 174, and investigation needs the court's direction. Ask which category your complaint falls in, and get that answer in writing if possible.
  6. If the police refuse to register an FIR for a cognizable offence, do not argue at the desk and do not leave without a record — use the police-inaction guide in this set for the next steps.

Cyber Complaint: Online Fraud, Hacking and Harassment ·

When it applies: When money is taken online by fraud, an account is hacked, or someone harasses, blackmails or impersonates you online.

  1. Act fast, but do not panic-delete anything. Take screenshots of the chats, numbers, links, payment pages and transaction messages, and save the original messages too.
  2. For financial fraud, call the national cybercrime helpline 1930 at once and also inform your bank, so the transaction can be flagged and, where possible, the money trail can be followed quickly.
  3. File a complaint on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal, cybercrime.gov.in, with the screenshots, transaction details and the suspect's numbers or links. Save the acknowledgement number.
  4. Also give an FIR or written complaint at the police station under BNSS 173 where a cognizable offence is involved, and attach the portal acknowledgement and screenshots.
  5. Never pay a caller who demands more money to 'return' the lost money, and never share OTPs, PINs or passwords with anyone — no genuine bank or police officer asks for them.
  6. Change the passwords of affected accounts, turn on two-step verification, and keep a dated file of every complaint number, bank reference and police paper.

Anticipatory Bail: If You Fear Arrest ·

When it applies: When you have reason to believe you may be arrested for a non-bailable offence, and you want the court to direct that you be released on bail if arrested.

  1. Do not wait until arrest happens. Speak to a lawyer early with the FIR or complaint copy, if any, and the full facts — hiding a fact from your own lawyer only weakens the application.
  2. The application under BNSS 482 is made to the Court of Session or the High Court. It must explain why arrest is apprehended and why bail, if arrested, would be justified.
  3. The court may grant interim protection while it hears the matter, or it may call for the police version first. Follow the court's interim directions exactly, including appearing when told to.
  4. If anticipatory bail is granted, read its conditions — cooperation with investigation, no tampering with evidence or witnesses, and court appearances — and keep proof of compliance.
  5. Anticipatory bail is not the end of the case: if you are later arrested and released under it, the regular case still proceeds, and regular bail rules (BNSS 480) may apply at later stages. Keep your lawyer informed at every stage.

Police Inaction: What to Do When Your Complaint Is Not Heard ·

When it applies: When the police refuse to register your FIR, or register it but take no visible step, and you need the complaint to move forward lawfully.

  1. Keep a paper trail from day one: your written complaint copy, the date you gave it, the officer's name, and any receipt or acknowledgement — or a note that none was given.
  2. Send a written complaint to a senior police officer, by post or in person, enclosing your original complaint copy and asking for the FIR under BNSS 173 or for investigation under BNSS 175. Keep proof of sending.
  3. Wait a reasonable, short time and note the dates. Then, if there is still no action, you may file a complaint before the Magistrate, who examines the complainant under BNSS 223 and can consider directing investigation.
  4. Before the Magistrate, state facts in order, produce your complaint copies, postal proof and any evidence, and answer questions truthfully. Do not exaggerate — one wrong detail can damage a true complaint.
  5. Do not take the law into your own hands, do not pay anyone who promises to 'get the FIR done', and do not file the same complaint in several places with different facts.
  6. At every step, keep copies of everything you file and everything you receive, in date order. A complete file is what makes the next forum take your complaint seriously.

  6. Breach of a protection order is an offence under DV Act Sec 31. Report any breach to the police and to the Magistrate immediately, with proof. Where the conduct is also a criminal offence, such as cruelty (BNS 85), a separate criminal complaint can be made.

  1. Put safety first. If you are in immediate danger, call 112. Preserve messages, emails, photos and any other record exactly as received; do not edit originals. Note dates, places and witnesses.
  2. Find out which committee applies: the Internal Committee of your workplace (POSH Act Sec 4, for workplaces with ten or more employees) or, where there is no Internal Committee, the Local Committee set up through the District Officer (Sec 6).
  3. Make a written complaint to the Internal Committee or Local Committee under POSH Act Sec 9, within three months of the incident (or of the last incident, if there was a series).
  4. Conciliation under POSH Act Sec 10 happens only if you ask for it, and only before the inquiry. If settlement terms are not complied with, the committee proceeds with the inquiry.
  5. The inquiry under POSH Act Sec 11 must be completed within 90 days. The committee has civil-court-like powers to summon persons, require documents and examine witnesses. Both sides get a chance to be heard.
  6. After the inquiry, the committee sends its report and recommendations under POSH Act Sec 13, and the employer or District Officer acts on them. Keep a copy of the complaint, the report and the action taken.
  7. Where the conduct is also a criminal offence, you may separately complain to the police. The POSH complaint and the police complaint are different routes and one does not cancel the other.

  1. Note the facts in writing: who is not maintaining or is ill-treating the senior citizen, since when, and what help, money or property is involved. Keep identity proof, proof of relationship, bank papers and property papers together.
  2. First, make a clear written request to the child or relative concerned, asking for maintenance or for the ill-treatment to stop, and keep a copy. A written record helps later, even if the request is refused.
  3. Apply to the Maintenance Tribunal (the Sub-Divisional Officer) under Sec 5 of the Senior Citizens Act, 2007. Under Sec 4, children and relatives who inherit property have an obligation to maintain a senior citizen who cannot maintain himself or herself.
  4. Ask the Tribunal for a maintenance order under Sec 9. Separately, a parent who cannot maintain himself or herself may also claim maintenance from children under BNSS 144.
  5. If property was transferred on the condition that the transferee would provide care or amenities, and that condition is not met, ask the Tribunal about cancellation of that transfer under Sec 23 of the Senior Citizens Act.
  6. If a senior citizen is abandoned or ill-treated, report it: Sec 24 of the Senior Citizens Act provides protection against abandonment and abuse. In case of threats or danger, call 112 and inform the nearest police station.
  7. If an abusive child or relative is occupying the senior citizen's property, ask the Tribunal about eviction from that property, and keep every order and receipt with your papers.

When it applies: When goods bought or services hired turn out defective or deficient — wrong product, fake product, non-delivery, poor repair, overcharging, or a promised service not given.

  1. Keep the proof first: bill or invoice, warranty card, packaging, photos of the defect, delivery record, and every chat, email or call record with the seller or service provider.
  2. Complain in writing to the seller or service provider, stating the defect or deficiency, what you want (refund, replacement, repair or compensation), and a reasonable time to resolve it. Keep a copy and proof of sending.
  3. If the problem is not resolved, file a consumer complaint before the District, State or National Consumer Commission according to the value of the claim (Consumer Protection Act, 2019, Sec 34-36). A 'complaint' is defined in Sec 2(6) of the Act.
  4. File within the limitation period: Sec 69 of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 provides a two-year limitation for a consumer complaint. Do not wait until the end of the period; file as soon as the seller's reply (or silence) makes the dispute clear.
  5. In the complaint, state the facts in order, the relief you seek, and attach the bill, warranty, photos and correspondence as evidence. Attend the hearings and keep every order and receipt.
  6. If you are aggrieved by the Commission's order, an appeal lies as provided in the Act, including a first appeal to the State Commission under Sec 41 against a District Commission order. If an order in your favour is not obeyed, seek its execution under Sec 71.

When it applies: When a tenant faces an eviction threat, receives a notice to vacate, or cannot get a security deposit back after vacating.

  1. Keep your tenancy papers together: the rent agreement (if any), rent receipts or bank-transfer proof, deposit receipt, and any written notice from the landlord. These papers decide most tenancy disputes.
  2. A landlord may not evict you by force: cutting water or electricity, changing locks, removing your belongings, or threatening you is not a lawful eviction. Eviction must come through the court or rent authority process applicable in your State. If you face threats or danger, call 112 and inform the nearest police station.
  3. If you receive a notice to vacate, read it carefully and note the date you received it. Do not ignore it. Reply in writing, keep a copy, and keep proof of sending.
  4. If an eviction case or proceeding is filed against you, appear on the date given and file your reply with your agreement, rent receipts and deposit proof. Missing a date can lead to an order against you in your absence.
  5. If you are the tenant and you want to leave, give notice in writing as per your agreement, hand over the keys against a written receipt, and take photos of the property's condition on the day you leave.
  6. For the security deposit, first demand its refund in writing after vacating, with your bank details. If it is not refunded, keep the demand letter and seek advice on a civil claim for the deposit, with your agreement and receipts as proof.

Where to go: Civil court or rent controller / rent authority applicable in your State; nearest police station (for threats or forcible eviction attempts); free legal aid office.

Road Accident and Insurance Claim: What to Do, Step by Step ·

When it applies: When a person is injured, or a family member dies, in a road accident, and compensation or an insurance claim has to be pursued.

  1. Get medical care first. In a road accident, treatment comes before paperwork. Keep every medical bill, discharge paper, prescription and test report.
  2. Inform the police where required and keep a copy of the information given (BNSS 173). Note the place, time, vehicles involved, insurance details if available, and names of witnesses. Take photos of the scene and the vehicles if it is safe to do so.
  3. Inform the insurer in writing promptly, with the policy number, accident details and medical papers, and keep the claim number and a copy of everything you send. Do not sign a full-and-final settlement you have not read and understood.
  4. For compensation for death or bodily injury in a motor accident, a claim petition lies before the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal under Sec 166 of the Motor Vehicles Act (Tribunal under Sec 165; award under Sec 168). An interim, no-fault claim is also available under Sec 164.
  5. File promptly. Time limits in accident claims are contested and fact-specific, so do not delay: take advice on limitation at the first meeting, with your accident date and papers in hand.
  6. If the insurer rejects, delays or partly settles the claim, first raise a written grievance with the insurer and keep its reply. Then consider the Insurance Ombudsman or a consumer complaint, with the policy, claim papers and the insurer's letters as evidence.

RTI: How to Get Information from a Public Authority · RTI:

When it applies: When you need a record, file, decision or status update held by a government department or other public authority.

  1. Identify the public authority that holds the record you want. An RTI application goes to that authority's Public Information Officer (PIO), not to any office in general.
  2. Write a short, specific application under RTI Act Sec 6: name the record clearly (subject, date or period, file or decision), and ask for information, inspection, or certified copies. You do not have to give reasons for asking (Sec 6(2)). Pay only the prescribed fee shown on the form or portal.
  3. Submit it to the PIO and keep a stamped copy, receipt or online acknowledgement. If you gave it to the wrong authority, it must be transferred to the correct one within five days (Sec 6(3)).
  4. The PIO must reply within 30 days (Sec 7(1)); information concerning a person's life or liberty must be given within 48 hours. If there is no reply in time, that is a deemed refusal (Sec 7(2)), and the information must then be supplied free of charge (Sec 7(6)).
  5. If information is refused, the reply must give reasons, the period for appeal, and the appellate authority's particulars (Sec 7(8)). Read the reasons before deciding your next step.
  6. If you are aggrieved, file a first appeal under Sec 19(1) within 30 days before the First Appellate Authority (an officer senior to the PIO). If still aggrieved, file a second appeal under Sec 19(3) within 90 days before the Central or State Information Commission, as applicable.
  7. Separately, a complaint under Sec 18 lies to the Information Commission where, for example, no PIO is appointed, your application was refused to be accepted, there was no response in time, or misleading information was given. Under Sec 20 the Commission may impose a penalty on the PIO for delay or refusal without reasonable cause.

Custody and Remand: What Happens After Arrest ·

When it applies: When you, or someone you know, has been arrested and is in police or judicial custody, and you want to know what happens next and what to watch at each court date.

  1. Count from the time of arrest. You cannot be kept in police custody beyond 24 hours without being produced before a Magistrate (BNSS 58). Note the arrest date and time in writing at once.
  2. At every production before the Magistrate, ask what the police are seeking — further police custody or judicial custody — and for how many days. Police custody and judicial custody are different, and the court decides, not the police alone.
  3. Ask at every remand whether the investigation is complete and whether the chargesheet has been filed. If the chargesheet is not filed within the period allowed under BNSS 187, default bail may arise — ask your lawyer whether it applies in your case.
  4. Keep the remand papers: every remand order states the next date and the kind of custody. If a date is missed in your notes, the next hearing can pass without you knowing what was ordered.
  5. You have the right to be informed of the grounds of arrest and of the right to bail (BNSS 47). If the grounds were never told to you, tell your lawyer at the first meeting — it matters for the bail application.
  6. If you are ill or injured in custody, ask for medical examination and treatment, and keep the medical papers with the case file. Do not wait until the next hearing to mention an injury.

Juvenile Bail: A Child in Conflict with Law ·

When it applies: When a person who is apparently a child (under 18) is apprehended by the police for an alleged offence, and the family wants to know the correct route for bail.

  1. A child must be placed under the charge of the Special Juvenile Police Unit or the designated Child Welfare Police Officer, and produced before the Juvenile Justice Board without loss of time and within 24 hours of apprehension, excluding journey time (JJ Act, Sec 10). A child must never be kept in a police lockup or a jail.
  2. Bail for a child is sought before the Juvenile Justice Board under JJ Act, Sec 12 — that Board route is the route for a child, not the adult anticipatory-bail route. Under Sec 12, a child apprehended or brought before the Board is to be released on bail, with or without surety, or placed under a probation officer or a fit person.
  3. Bail can be refused only on three grounds: that release is likely to bring the child into association with a known criminal, expose the child to moral, physical or psychological danger, or defeat the ends of justice — and the Board must record its reasons for refusal (JJ Act, Sec 12).
  4. If bail is not granted, the child is to be kept only in an observation home or a place of safety until brought before the Board, and during the inquiry if the Board so orders — never with adult accused persons.
  5. Keep the child's age proof ready (school record, birth certificate or similar paper) and give it to the lawyer at once, because the Board route depends on the person being apparently a child. If bail conditions cannot be fulfilled within seven days, the child is to be produced before the Board again for modification of the conditions (JJ Act, Sec 12).
  6. In an emergency, call 112. Do not discuss the child's case on social media and do not share the child's name or photograph publicly — the child's identity is protected, and publicity can harm the child and the case.

Cyber-Fraud Money Trail: Freeze, Report, Preserve ·

When it applies: When money has been taken from your account by online fraud — a fake call, link, app or investment promise — and you want to stop further loss and build a complaint that the police and the bank can act on.

  1. Act in the first hour if you can, but do not panic-delete anything. Take screenshots of the chats, numbers, links, payment pages and transaction messages, and save the original messages too. A forwarded screenshot alone proves little; the original is the evidence.
  2. Call your bank at once and ask, in writing, for the transaction to be flagged and disputed. Keep the bank's complaint or reference number, the date and time of your call, and the name of the person you spoke to. Do not wait for the police complaint before telling the bank.
  3. In an emergency, call 112. Then file a complaint on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal, cybercrime.gov.in, with the screenshots, transaction details and the suspect's numbers or links, and save the acknowledgement number.
  4. Also give a written complaint at the police station under BNSS 173 where a cognizable offence is involved, and attach the portal acknowledgement, the bank complaint number and the screenshots. Cheating by personation using a computer resource is covered by IT Act Sec 66D, and cheating itself by BNS 318.
  5. Never pay anyone who demands more money to 'return' the lost money — that is the second fraud. Never share OTPs, PINs or passwords with anyone, and never install an app or give screen access at a stranger's asking.
  6. Keep one dated file: bank papers, portal acknowledgement, police complaint copy, and every later message from the suspect. If the suspect contacts you again, do not reply — screenshot it and add it to the file.

Women: Harassment and Cruelty — How to Complain Safely ·

When it applies: When a woman faces sexual harassment, stalking, voyeurism, insult to modesty, or cruelty by her husband or his relatives, and wants to complain without losing evidence or safety.

  1. Write down what happened, when, where and who saw it, while it is fresh. Save messages, call records, photographs and medical papers exactly as they are — do not edit or delete them. Dates matter more than perfect language.
  2. Give a written complaint at the police station under BNSS 173. Assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty is BNS 74, sexual harassment is BNS 75, and cruelty by a husband or his relatives is BNS 85. Name the offence you are complaining about in your own words; the police record the section.
  3. If the complaint is about violence at home, you can also apply to the Magistrate under the Domestic Violence Act, 2005 — Sec 12 for reliefs, Sec 18 for a protection order, Sec 19 for a residence order and Sec 20 for monetary relief. Ask at the police station or the court for the Protection Officer, who helps with the application and with shelter and medical aid.
  4. If you are in danger, call 112 at once and go to a safe place — a relative's home, a neighbour's home or the police station. Do not wait for the 'right' time to complain when safety is at stake.
  5. For offences of a sexual nature, your identity must not be disclosed: disclosure of the identity of a victim of certain offences is itself punishable (BNS 72). If anyone publishes your name or photograph in connection with the case, tell your lawyer and the police at once.
  6. Keep copies of everything: the complaint copy, the FIR number if one is registered, medical papers, and every court order. If the other side pressures you to withdraw the complaint, note the date, time and words used, and tell your lawyer before signing anything.

Children: Reporting a Sexual Offence under POCSO · बच्चे: POCSO के तहत यौन अपराध की शिकायत

When it applies: When a child has faced a sexual offence, or an adult learns that one may have happened, and the family wants to report it in a way that protects the child.

  1. Report it — do not keep it inside the family. Under POCSO Act Sec 19, any person who has knowledge that an offence has been committed must report it to the police or the Special Juvenile Police Unit, and failure to report is itself punishable under Sec 21. Reporting is a duty, not a choice.
  2. Go to the police station, or call 112 in an emergency, and give the complaint in writing. The child's statement is to be recorded at the child's residence or a place of the child's choice, as far as possible, by a woman police officer (POCSO Act, Sec 24). The child should not be made to repeat the account to many different people.
  3. Never share the child's name, photograph, school or address in connection with the case — disclosure of the child's identity is prohibited (POCSO Act, Sec 23). This applies to family members and social media just as much as to the press.
  4. The case is tried by a Special Court (POCSO Act, Sec 28). The trial is held in camera (Sec 37), the child is not to be exposed to the accused while testifying (Sec 36), and the child's evidence is to be recorded within thirty days of cognizance, with the trial completed within one year, as far as possible (Sec 35).
  5. Get medical care at once if the child is hurt or unwell, and keep the medical papers with the case file. Medical care comes first; it is also part of the record of what happened.
  6. Ask the lawyer about interim compensation for the child's rehabilitation and support: the Special Court can award compensation to the child victim (POCSO Act, Sec 33). Keep every paper — complaint copy, medical papers and court orders — in one file.

Property Dispute: First Steps Before You File ·

When it applies: When you face a dispute over land, a house or a boundary — possession taken, boundary moved, papers disputed — and you want to prepare the ground before going to court.

  1. Collect your papers first: the sale deed or title document, mutation or revenue records, the latest survey or demarcation map if you have one, and tax receipts. A claim without papers is a story; a claim with papers is a case.
  2. Write down the facts in order: when you bought or inherited the property, who is in possession now, when the dispute started, and what exactly changed — a wall, a fence, a lock, a crop. Dates and a simple sketch of the boundary help more than long arguments.
  3. Send a written notice through your lawyer before filing, stating your claim and asking the other side to stop the disputed act. A notice does not decide the case, but it creates a dated record that you tried to settle it first.
  4. If someone has entered your property or taken possession by force or threat, that may also be a criminal offence: criminal trespass is BNS 329(1), and a written complaint can be given at the police station under BNSS 173. The criminal complaint and the civil case are separate tracks — one does not replace the other.
  5. Where a dispute over land or water is likely to cause a breach of the peace, the Executive Magistrate route under BNSS 164 exists for urgent preventive action. Ask your lawyer whether your dispute fits that route, or whether a civil suit for injunction and possession is the right forum.
  6. Do not take possession back by force, do not break a lock, and do not sign any 'settlement' or paper you have not read. Self-help feels fast and usually makes the case worse. In an emergency involving threats or violence, call 112.

Sections cited: BNSS 164, BNSS 173, BNS 329(1). No section number is cited for the civil suit and injunction steps on purpose: the civil forum and procedure depend on the nature of the claim and the property, and this guide cites no civil section rather than a wrong one.

Victim Compensation: Money for Loss and Rehabilitation ·

When it applies: When you, or your dependent, have suffered loss or injury because of a crime and need rehabilitation, whether or not the offender has been caught.

  1. Know the scheme: under BNSS 396, every State Government, in coordination with the Central Government, prepares a scheme for paying compensation to victims or their dependents who suffered loss or injury from a crime and require rehabilitation.
  2. If the court recommends compensation in your case, the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) or the State Legal Services Authority (SLSA) decides the amount after enquiry.
  3. If the offender is not traced or identified and no trial takes place, you or your dependents may still apply directly to the DLSA or SLSA for compensation — do not assume that "no accused" means "no compensation".
  4. For urgent help, the DLSA or SLSA may order immediate first-aid or medical benefits free of cost, on the certificate of the police officer in charge of the police station or a Magistrate.
  5. Keep the papers that decide the amount: medical records and bills, proof of loss of earnings, the FIR copy, and any court order recommending compensation. Apply through a lawyer or the free legal aid office if the forms confuse you.

Where to go: District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) office in your district; the court hearing your case; free legal aid office.

Witness: Protection and Safety When You Testify ·

When it applies: When you are a witness in a criminal case and you fear threats, pressure to change your statement, or harm for testifying.

  1. Know the scheme: under BNSS 398, every State Government must prepare and notify a Witness Protection Scheme for the State, to ensure protection of witnesses. Ask your lawyer or the free legal aid office how the scheme in force applies to your case.
  2. Tell someone in authority at once: inform the police officer investigating the case, or the court, in writing, about any threat, with the date, time, place and the exact words used. A verbal complaint that is never written down is hard to act on later.
  3. If you face immediate danger, call 112 and inform the nearest police station. Do not wait for the next hearing date.
  4. Do not discuss your evidence with the accused side, and do not accept money or favours to change your statement. A statement changed under pressure can damage both the case and your own credibility.
  5. Keep your summons, a copy of your statement, and a dated note of every threat or approach. Give copies to your lawyer, and keep the originals safe.

Free Legal Aid: A Lawyer When You Cannot Afford One ·

When it applies: When you are facing a criminal case — as accused or victim — and you cannot afford a lawyer, or you belong to a category entitled to free legal services.

  1. Know the right: under BNSS 341, where in a trial or appeal before a Court the accused is not represented by a lawyer and it appears that he has not sufficient means to engage one, the Court must assign a lawyer for his defence at the expense of the State.
  2. Do not wait for the trial to begin: apply early to the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) in your district, with proof of income if asked, and state whether you are the accused, the victim, or a dependent.
  3. Free legal services under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 (Sec 12) cover categories including women and children, members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, and persons with disability, among others — if you fall in one of these categories, say so in the application.
  4. A legal-aid lawyer is a real lawyer for your case: give him the full papers — FIR, chargesheet, bail papers, dates — and attend every date. Free does not mean you can stay away.
  5. If the lawyer assigned to you does not appear or does not prepare, complain in writing to the DLSA and ask for a change. Keep a copy of the complaint.

Where to go: District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) office in your district; the court hearing your case.

Chargesheet Copies: What the Accused and the Victim Must Get Free ·

When it applies: After the police file their report (chargesheet) in a case started on a police report, when you are the accused or the victim and you need the case papers.

  1. Know the duty: under BNSS 230, in a case instituted on a police report, the Magistrate must supply the accused — and the victim, if represented by an advocate — free of cost, a copy of the police report, the FIR, the statements recorded, and the other documents relied on.
  2. Check the set when you receive it: police report, FIR, statements of witnesses the prosecution will examine, and the documents and articles relied on. If a page is missing, point it out in writing at once — do not discover the gap at trial.
  3. The police must also send enough copies of the report and documents to the Magistrate for supply to the accused (BNSS 193). If the court says copies are "not ready", ask for the next date for supply in writing and note it.
  4. Do not pay a middleman for these copies: supply under BNSS 230 is free of cost. Court copying fees for other, certified copies are a separate matter — ask the court office, not a tout, what is payable.
  5. Victims: if you have no advocate, engage one, or approach the free legal aid office — your copy under BNSS 230 comes through your advocate, so this step matters.

Your Statement: Police, Magistrate and Court — What Counts ·

When it applies: When the police examine you during investigation, or you are asked to give a statement or confession before a Magistrate.

  1. Keep the three statements apart: what you tell the police during investigation, what you say before a Magistrate, and what you say as a witness in court are three different things, with different value in law. Do not treat a police-station conversation as if it were court evidence.
  2. A statement recorded by the police during investigation (BNSS 180) is not to be signed by the person making it (BNSS 181), and it is not substantive evidence by itself — it is mainly used to test what a witness later says in court.
  3. A confession made to a police officer cannot be proved against the accused (BSA 23). That is why a confession during investigation is recorded by a Magistrate, under BNSS 183, with safeguards about voluntariness — and a confession made in police custody is not proved unless made in the immediate presence of a Magistrate (BSA 23).
  4. You cannot be compelled to be a witness against yourself (Constitution, Article 20(3)). If you are the accused, you may consult your lawyer before deciding what, if anything, to state before a Magistrate — and a Magistrate must be satisfied that a confession is voluntary before recording it.
  5. Never sign a statement you have not read, or that is written in a language you do not understand. Ask for it to be read over to you, correct mistakes on the spot, and note the date, place and officers present afterwards.

Summons and Warrants: What to Do When a Court Paper Arrives ·

When it applies: When you receive a summons to appear in court, or you learn that a warrant has been issued against you, in any criminal case.

  1. Read the paper fully before anything else: the court name, the case number, the date and time of appearance, and whether you are called as accused, witness, or complainant. A summons is a direction to appear; a warrant authorises your arrest or production — they are not the same, and must not be treated the same.
  2. Appear on the date given, with the paper and your identity proof, and take your lawyer if you are the accused. Missing a date without reason can lead to a warrant, and a missed witness date can delay the whole trial.
  3. If you genuinely cannot appear on that date — illness, travel already booked, a clash — apply in advance through your lawyer for another date, with proof. Do not simply stay away and hope the date passes quietly.
  4. If a warrant has been issued against you, do not wait to be picked up: contact your lawyer at once, who can apply for recall or cancellation of the warrant, or for bail, depending on the kind of warrant and the stage of the case. Surrendering through the court, with a lawyer, is far safer than being arrested.
  5. Keep every court paper in one file, in date order, with the date you received it written on it. If a paper is served on a family member in your absence, note who received it and when, and inform your lawyer the same day.

Where to go: The court named on the paper; your lawyer; free legal aid office if you have no lawyer.

Missing Person: What the Family Should Do First · लापता व्यक्ति: परिवार सबसे पहले क्या करे

When it applies: When a family member, friend or child does not return home, cannot be contacted, and you fear something may have happened to them.

  1. Go to the police station at once and give a written complaint with the person's full name, age, photograph, clothes last worn, and the time and place they were last seen. Ask for the complaint number or receipt in writing, and keep it safe.
  2. Do not accept being sent away without a record. If you are told to come back later, ask politely for the reason to be noted and for the name of the officer you spoke to, and return with another family member if needed.
  3. Write down, in order, everything you know: the last phone call or message, the person's daily route, friends they may have met, and any vehicle or person seen with them. Share this note with the police, not only by telling it once.
  4. Preserve the phone trail: do not delete chats, call logs or location history from the person's phone or your own. Note the phone number and, if you know it, the phone's identifying number, and give both to the police.
  5. Check, in parallel, nearby hospitals, bus stands, railway stations and places the person usually visits, and tell the police at once about anything you find. Keep one family member as the single contact point for the police, so information does not get scattered.
  6. If there is any immediate danger — a threat, a suspicious vehicle following the person, or a child missing — call 112 at once, and then go to the police station. Keep updating the police in writing whenever new information comes in.

Loan Recovery Harassment: Calls, Visits and Threats ·

When it applies: When loan recovery agents call repeatedly, visit your home or workplace, abuse or threaten you or your family, or pressure you to pay on the spot.

  1. Stay calm and do not pay cash on the spot to an agent you do not recognise. Ask for the agent's name, agency, and written authority, and note the date, time and words used. Never hand over original documents or blank signed papers.
  2. Keep a record of every call and visit: screenshots of messages, call timings, and the names used. If calls are abusive or threatening, save the recordings and messages exactly as they are — do not edit or delete them.
  3. Write to the bank or lender itself — not only to the agent — stating the loan account, the behaviour complained of, and asking that all further contact be in writing. Keep a copy of your letter and its receipt.
  4. Never share OTPs, PINs, passwords or net-banking details with a caller, even if the caller claims to be from the bank or the police. No genuine bank or officer asks for them.
  5. If you are threatened in person, or feel unsafe at home or at work, call 112 at once. For repeated harassment, give a written complaint at the police station with your call record and the bank letter attached.
  6. Do not sign a new loan, settlement or blank paper under pressure to stop the harassment. If you cannot pay, ask your lawyer or a legal-aid office about lawful options before signing anything.

Caste Atrocity Complaint: How to Report Safely ·

When it applies: When a person from a Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe faces humiliation, abuse, assault, boycott, land-grabbing or threats because of caste, and wants the complaint recorded safely and correctly.

  1. Write down, before you go, what happened in order: date, time, place, the exact words or acts, the names of the persons involved, and the names of witnesses. Take any photos, messages or papers that support it, and keep the originals safe.
  2. Give a written complaint at the police station, stating clearly that the act was done because of caste, and which caste-related words or acts were used. Read the complaint before signing, get mistakes corrected, and take a copy with the complaint number.
  3. Do not go alone if you feel unsafe. Take a trusted family member, a community worker or a lawyer with you, and note the names of the officers you meet and the time of your visit.
  4. If the police do not record the complaint, do not argue at the desk and do not leave without a record. Use the police-inaction guide in this set for the next steps, and keep every paper in one dated file.
  5. Protect yourself after complaining: save any new threats exactly as they arrive, tell the police in writing at once, and do not accept a private settlement under pressure. If you feel threatened, call 112 immediately.
  6. Ask the police station and your lawyer, in writing where possible, which special forum or court will hear the case and what relief or assistance schemes may apply to you. Do not rely on promises of money or dates made orally by anyone.

Lost Phone and Lost Documents: Block, Report, Replace ·

When it applies: When your mobile phone is lost or stolen, or an identity document, passbook, certificate or other important paper is lost, and you need to stop misuse and get replacements.

  1. Act the same day. Call your telecom operator and get the SIM blocked, and change the passwords of email, banking and payment apps from another device. Do not wait to see if the phone turns up.
  2. Give a written complaint at the police station with the phone number, the phone's identifying number if you know it, and the time and place of loss. Take the complaint number in writing — you will need it for blocking and for replacements.
  3. Ask the police station about the procedure for blocking the phone itself, and follow the steps they give you in writing. Keep the complaint copy with the phone's bill or box details, if you have them.
  4. For a lost document, inform the issuing office or bank in writing and ask for the document to be marked lost, so it cannot be misused in your name. Keep a copy of that letter and its receipt.
  5. When applying for a replacement, carry identity proof, the police complaint copy, and any old copy or number of the lost document. Never pay a tout who promises a faster replacement for extra money.
  6. If the lost phone or document is later used to cheat you or someone else — a call, a message or a transaction in your name — save the evidence exactly as it is and report it at once to the police station and to your bank.

Medical Negligence: Patient Rights and the First Complaint ·

When it applies: When treatment in a hospital or clinic goes wrong, records are refused, or you believe care was careless, and you want to complain properly without destroying your own case.

  1. Collect and keep every paper first: prescriptions, test reports, bills, discharge summaries and medicine receipts, in date order. Note the names of the doctors and staff, and the dates and times of treatment, while memory is fresh.
  2. Ask the hospital in writing for the complete medical record, including notes and reports, and keep a copy of your request and its receipt. Do not accept an oral refusal — ask for the reason in writing.
  3. Write your complaint in order: what treatment was given, what went wrong, what harm followed, and what you are asking for. Stick to facts and dates; do not add medical conclusions you cannot support.
  4. Take a second medical opinion from another doctor, and keep that opinion in writing. It helps you understand whether the harm was an unavoidable risk or carelessness — a distinction every forum will ask about.
  5. Complain first to the hospital itself, in writing, and keep the reply. If that fails, ask a lawyer which forum fits your case — a consumer forum, the medical council, or a court — because the right forum depends on the facts, and time limits differ by route, so do not delay.
  6. Do not sign a settlement, waiver or blank paper under pressure in the hospital, and do not post the doctor's or hospital's name online in anger before taking advice. A hurried post can create a second dispute of its own.

Family of a Person in Jail: Meeting, Money, Papers and Legal Help ·

When it applies: When a family member is in jail — awaiting trial or after sentence — and the family needs to meet them, send money or clothes, follow the case papers, and arrange legal help.

  1. First, confirm the facts in writing: the jail name, the prisoner's number if given, the case number, the court, and the next date. Keep these on one page — every office you visit will ask for them.
  2. For a meeting, carry your identity proof and go by the jail's own meeting rules, which differ from jail to jail. Ask the jail office, politely and in writing where possible, about meeting days, timings and what may be carried in.
  3. Send money or articles only through the jail's official channel, and keep every receipt. Never pay a middleman who promises a meeting, better food or early release for cash.
  4. Follow the case, not only the jail: keep the lawyer's name and number, the next court date, and copies of bail, remand and chargesheet papers in one dated file. If a date is missed, inform the lawyer the same day.
  5. If the family cannot afford a lawyer, approach the free legal-aid office with identity proof and the case papers, and ask in writing what help is available. Legal aid is not charity to be shy about — it exists for exactly this situation.
  6. If the person in jail is ill, or you learn of harm to them, inform the jail authorities and the lawyer in writing at once, and ask for medical care to be recorded. If you feel threatened by anyone over the case, call 112 immediately.

Cheque Bounce: When a Cheque Dishonours ·

When it applies: When a cheque you received for money genuinely owed to you is returned unpaid by the bank, and you want to recover the money through the proper complaint route.

  1. Keep the cheque and the bank's return memo exactly as they are — originals, not photocopies alone. Note the date of the cheque, the date it was presented, and the date it was returned, and keep the bank memo with the cheque in one file.
  2. Do not alter, overwrite or re-present the cheque on your own advice, and do not accept a replacement cheque without noting, in writing, that it replaces the dishonoured one. A careless second presentation can confuse the record of dates.
  3. Send a written demand to the drawer at once, by a method that leaves proof of delivery, asking for payment of the cheque amount. Keep a copy of the demand and the delivery proof — these papers are the backbone of any later complaint.
  4. Act at once and take a lawyer's advice immediately, because this route has strict, short time limits at every step, and delay can close the remedy altogether. Do not wait for promises of payment while the time runs out.
  5. If payment does not come, ask your lawyer about the complaint route and the forum, and file with the full dated file: cheque, return memo, demand, delivery proof, and any bills or agreement showing why the money was owed. A complaint without the debt's paper trail is weak.
  6. Never threaten the drawer, and never accept a cash settlement without a written receipt stating the amount, the date, and that it settles the dishonoured cheque. If you are threatened over the cheque, call 112 immediately.

Unnatural Death in the Family: Inquest, Post-mortem and Papers ·

When it applies: When a family member dies suddenly, in an accident, by suicide, or in circumstances that look suspicious or unclear, and the family must deal with the police, the inquest and the post-mortem while grieving.

  1. Inform the police at once, in writing where possible, with the time the death was discovered, the place, and who was present. Do not move the body or disturb the scene more than is needed for immediate care, and note the names of the officers who attend.
  2. Understand the inquest: the police or Magistrate records the apparent cause of death and the statements of family and witnesses. Give your statement in your own words, read it before signing, get mistakes corrected, and take a copy with the reference number.
  3. Ask the police or hospital, politely and in writing where possible, where and when the post-mortem will be done, and who will receive the report. Keep a copy of the post-mortem report when it is available — later claims and complaints both depend on it.
  4. Preserve what may matter: the deceased's clothes, medicines, phone, messages and photographs, exactly as they are. Do not wash clothes, delete messages or throw away medicines before the police have seen them, and note anything unusual you observed.
  5. Build one dated file: the police papers, the inquest record, the post-mortem report, the death certificate when issued, and identity papers. Give copies, not originals, to insurers, banks and offices, and note every office you visit and every paper you hand over.
  6. If you suspect foul play, say so in a written complaint with the reasons and the evidence you have, and take a lawyer's advice before signing any no-objection paper or settlement. If anyone threatens the family over the death, call 112 immediately.

Bribe Demand by a Public Servant: Refuse Safely and Report ·

When it applies: When a public servant, or a middleman acting for one, demands money or a favour to do lawful work — a certificate, a file movement, a licence, a bill — and you want to refuse without harming your work and report it properly.

  1. Do not pay in fear or anger, and do not argue at the counter. Note, at once and in your own words, the officer's name and office, the date, time and place, the exact words used, the amount or favour demanded, and the work it was demanded for.
  2. Never pay through a middleman, and never hand over money in an envelope, a file or a gift to "speed things up". A payment through a middleman is harder to prove, easier to deny, and leaves you with no record of your own.
  3. Preserve any evidence exactly as it is: messages, call records, receipts or papers connected with the demand. Do not edit, delete or re-record them, and do not make a secret recording in a way your lawyer has not advised on.
  4. Complain in writing: first to the officer's superior office, with your dated note and evidence attached, and ask a lawyer which anti-corruption complaint route fits your case. Keep a copy of the complaint and its receipt, and note every later visit and reply.
  5. Do not sign a false paper, a backdated application or a wrong statement to get your work done, even if you are told it is the only way. A paper you sign under pressure can later be used against you, while the bribe demand itself stays unproved.
  6. Follow your lawful work through the proper channel in parallel, in writing, so the file keeps moving on its own record. If you are threatened for refusing or complaining, call 112 immediately and report the threat in writing as well.

Sexual Assault: First Steps for the Survivor and the Family ·

When it applies: When a person has suffered a sexual assault, and the survivor or the family needs medical care, a safe complaint and preserved evidence, without pressure, publicity or blame.

  1. Put medical care and safety first. Go to a hospital or doctor at once, and tell the medical staff honestly what happened, so injuries and health risks are treated. If it can be done without delaying care, keep the clothes worn at the time unwashed and as they are, and do not delete messages or photographs connected with the incident.
  2. Do not face this alone if you can avoid it. Take a trusted person with you to the hospital and the police station, and ask the police station about the procedure and the support available to you. You may ask questions before giving a statement, and you may ask for a lawyer's help.
  3. Give the complaint in your own words, in order: what happened, when and where, who was involved, and what evidence exists. Read the complaint before signing, get mistakes corrected, and take a copy with the complaint number. Do not sign a version you have not read.
  4. Keep every paper in one private file: medical reports, the complaint copy, prescriptions and bills, and the names of the officers and doctors you met. Share these papers only with your lawyer, the police and the doctors treating you — not with neighbours, employers or social media.
  5. Protect privacy absolutely. Do not share the survivor's name, photograph or details publicly, and do not allow others to do so. If anyone publishes details or pressures the survivor to withdraw, note it exactly as it happens and report it in writing to the police and your lawyer.
  6. Ask a lawyer or a free legal-aid office, in writing where possible, about medical, counselling and legal support, and about the next steps and their timing. If there is any immediate danger to the survivor, call 112 at once.

Vehicle Theft: Report, Insurer and Papers ·

When it applies: When your two-wheeler, car or other vehicle is stolen, and you need a proper police report, an insurance claim and clean papers, without paying middlemen or buying the vehicle back from thieves.

  1. Report at once, in writing, at the police station for the place of theft. Give the registration number, the make and colour, the chassis and engine numbers if you know them, the time and place last seen, and where the keys are. Take the complaint number in writing.
  2. Inform your insurer in writing the same day, with the complaint copy attached, and ask what claim papers are needed. Keep a copy of that letter and its receipt — a delayed first notice is the commonest reason a claim file gets stuck.
  3. Inform the transport office in writing as well, and keep that letter's copy with the complaint. If a loan is running on the vehicle, inform the lender too, so instalments and papers are dealt with on record rather than by oral assurance.
  4. Never pay a middleman who promises to "find" the vehicle, and never buy the vehicle back from anyone claiming to hold it. Both routes fund the theft and leave you without a clean paper trail. If anyone offers the vehicle back, inform the police at once.
  5. Keep one file: registration papers, insurance policy, loan papers, keys and their number, photographs of the vehicle, and every letter with its receipt. Do not hand originals to any agent — give copies, and note whom you gave them to.
  6. If the vehicle is later found, or used in an offence, inform the police and the insurer in writing the same day, and do not take delivery or sign release papers without the police record being updated. If you are threatened over the theft, call 112 immediately.

Child Taken Away by the Other Parent: Custody Dispute First Steps ·

When it applies: When one parent takes a child away without agreement — from school, from home, or after a visit — and the other parent needs to protect the child and start the lawful custody route without a physical fight over the child.

  1. Stay calm and do not try to snatch the child back by force, in public or at school. Note at once the date, time and place, who took the child, who saw it, and any vehicle or message connected with it. A calm written record helps the court; a scuffle harms the child and your case.
  2. If the child's whereabouts are unknown, or you fear for the child's safety, inform the police in writing at once with the child's photograph, school and medical details, and the last known location. Keep the complaint copy — do not rely on an oral report alone.
  3. Take a lawyer's advice immediately about the family-court custody route, and about any existing custody order, agreement or school record. Bring the child's birth record, school papers, medical papers, and any earlier court order or written agreement to the first meeting.
  4. Keep the child's routine going: school attendance, medical care and contact with both sides of the family where it is safe. Do not stop the child's schooling, move the child to a new town, or change schools without legal advice — such steps are read by the court as part of the dispute itself.
  5. Do not coach the child on what to say, and do not speak against the other parent in front of the child. Keep messages with the other parent short, polite and in writing, about the child only. Courts notice, in writing, who kept the child's interest first.
  6. Do not accept a private "settlement" that hands over custody without a court record, and do not sign any paper about the child under pressure. If the child is in immediate danger, call 112 at once, and then inform your lawyer and the police in writing.

Unpaid Salary & Wrongful Termination: First Steps ·

When it applies: When your salary is delayed or unpaid, or you are removed from a job suddenly without a proper reason or notice.

  1. Gather your papers first: the appointment letter, salary slips, bank statements showing salary credits, attendance or work records, and any messages about your pay or removal. Without papers, it is your word against theirs.
  2. Put your demand in writing: send a short, polite letter or email to the employer asking for the unpaid salary and the reason for removal, and keep a copy. Oral complaints are easy to deny later.
  3. Note dates and promises in writing: when the salary stopped, what was promised and by whom, and who witnessed it. Dates decide most employment disputes.
  4. Do not sign blank papers or a resignation under pressure. Read every paper before signing, and if you are forced to sign, write on it that you signed under pressure and inform someone you trust the same day.
  5. If the employer does not respond, approach the labour office for your area with your papers. It can call both sides and try to settle the matter. Take a lawyer's advice before accepting any settlement.
  6. Keep every later payment and settlement in writing. If money is paid in parts, take a receipt for each part, and do not close the matter until the full amount is received.

Divorce & Maintenance: First Steps Before You File ·

When it applies: When a marriage has broken down and you need to understand the lawful route for divorce and for maintenance for yourself or your children.

  1. Collect the basic papers: the marriage certificate or wedding proof, identity papers, income papers of both sides, bank statements, and papers of any property or loans in either name.
  2. Write down the facts calmly: when the problems began, what happened, and what you want — divorce, maintenance, child custody, or all three. A clear written note helps your lawyer far more than a long emotional account.
  3. If there is violence or danger at home, put safety first. Call 112, move to a safe place, and get medical care for any injury. Keep the medical papers.
  4. Speak to a lawyer before filing anything. Divorce can be by mutual agreement or contested, and the papers, court and procedure differ. Do not copy someone else's case papers.
  5. For maintenance, keep proof of income and expenses: what you earn, what the other side earns, children's school and medical expenses, and household expenses. Maintenance is decided on need and capacity, so figures matter more than claims.
  6. Do not sign any settlement, property paper or custody agreement in a hurry. Read it fully, understand what you give up, and take advice before signing. A signed settlement is hard to undo.

Will, Succession & Inheritance Claim After a Death: First Steps ·

When it applies: When a family member has died and the family needs to deal with the will, bank accounts, property and the shares of the legal heirs.

  1. Get the death certificate first and keep several certified copies. Almost every office, bank and court will ask for it before doing anything.
  2. Find out whether a will exists. Check the home, the locker, the lawyer's office and the bank. If a will is found, keep the original safe and do not alter or add anything to it.
  3. List all property, accounts and debts: houses, land, bank accounts, deposits, vehicles, loans and dues. A claim made without a full list usually ends in a second dispute.
  4. Get the family papers in order: identity papers of all legal heirs, proof of relationship, and the property papers. Offices decide claims on papers, not on family statements alone.
  5. For bank accounts, locker and property transfer, approach the concerned office or court with the death certificate, the will if any, and the heirs' papers, and ask in writing what form or certificate they require. Requirements differ by office, so get them in writing.
  6. Do not divide property by force or by oral agreement alone. Put any family settlement in writing, signed by all heirs, and get it registered where the office requires it. If heirs disagree, take legal advice before anyone sells or transfers anything.

Online Defamation & Social Media Abuse: Preserve, Report, Complain ·

When it applies: When false posts, morphed photos, abusive messages or fake accounts are used to damage your reputation or harass you online.

  1. Preserve first, react later. Take screenshots showing the post, the account name, the link and the date, and save the original messages and links. Do not delete the abusive content yourself — deleted proof is hard to recover.
  2. Do not reply in anger or post a counter-attack. Angry replies become evidence against you and often spread the false post further. Stay silent in public and keep your record private.
  3. Report the post and the account on the platform itself. Use the platform's report option for harassment, impersonation or false information, and save the report number or acknowledgement.
  4. Write down the damage: who saw the post, what work or harm followed, and which messages or calls prove it. A complaint needs facts about harm, not only feelings.
  5. If there are threats, blackmail or danger, call 112 and give a written complaint at the police station with your preserved screenshots and links. Take the complaint number in writing.
  6. Speak to a lawyer about a legal notice and further action. A notice often gets false content removed faster than arguments online, and your lawyer can advise whether a complaint or a civil claim fits your case.

Traffic Challan & Seized Licence or Vehicle: What to Do · ट्रैफिक चालान व ज़ब्त लाइसेंस या वाहन: क्या करें

When it applies: When the traffic police stop you, issue a challan, or seize your driving licence or vehicle, and you need to handle it correctly.

  1. Stay calm and polite at the spot. Do not argue, offer money or try to leave by force. Note the officer's name and badge number if visible, the place, time and the reason given.
  2. Ask for the challan or seizure paper in writing. It should show the vehicle number, the alleged violation, and where and when to appear or pay. Never leave without a paper.
  3. Do not pay cash without a receipt. Pay only against a proper receipt or through the official payment process shown on the challan, and keep the receipt safe.
  4. Keep your vehicle papers together: driving licence, registration certificate, insurance and pollution certificate. Most problems at the spot come from missing papers, not from the violation itself.
  5. If a court date is given, attend it or send your lawyer. Ignoring a court date can lead to a warrant and a bigger problem than the challan. Carry the challan paper and your receipts.
  6. For a seized vehicle, ask in writing what is needed for release — papers, fine receipt or court order — and complete that step before paying any middleman. No middleman can release a vehicle without the required papers.

Neighbour Dispute: Resolve Without a Fight ·

When it applies: When a dispute with a neighbour over noise, water, parking, a common area or a boundary starts affecting your daily life.

  1. Keep a written record from the first incident: dates, times, what happened, photos if safe to take, and names of people who saw it. A dispute without dates is only an argument.
  2. Talk once, calmly and in the presence of another person if possible. State the problem and what you want changed, and listen to the other side. Many neighbour disputes end at this step.
  3. If talking fails, put it in writing: a short letter to the neighbour, or to the housing society or residents' association if there is one, stating the problem and asking for a solution. Keep a copy.
  4. Try mediation before court. Ask a respected common person, the society, or the local mediation route to help both sides agree. A written mediated settlement saves years of litigation.
  5. If there is a threat, abuse or danger, call 112 and give a written complaint. Safety comes before settlement, and a written complaint protects you if the matter grows.
  6. For boundary or property parts of the dispute, keep your property papers ready and do not move a boundary, wall or fence by force. A forced change becomes a new case against you. Take legal advice before any construction or change.

Home Search by Police: Your Rights During a Search ·

When it applies: When police officers come to search your home, whether or not they carry a search warrant. /

  1. Stay calm and ask, politely, to see the search warrant or the written authority for the search, and note the officers' names, ranks and the time they arrived.
  2. Do not physically obstruct the search, but you may ask that two independent witnesses from the neighbourhood be present, and that the search be done in your presence or in the presence of a family member.
  3. Watch what is taken and ask for a written list (seizure memo) of every item seized, with a copy given to you, and check the list against the items before you sign it.
  4. Do not sign any paper you have not read, and if anything in the list is wrong, write your objection on the paper itself before signing, in your own words.
  5. Keep your phone and documents aside rather than handing over passwords or unlocking devices on the spot, and note down everything that happened while it is fresh.
  6. If you feel unsafe or something unlawful happens during the search, note the details and speak to a lawyer at the first opportunity; in an emergency, call 112.

Tracking Your Court Case Online: Dates, Orders and Next Steps ·

When it applies: When you have a case pending in any court and want to know the next date, the latest order, or what stage the case is at.

  1. Keep your case number, the year, and the name of the court ready, because the official case-status portal searches by these details, not by a person's name alone.
  2. Open the official case-status service of the court concerned, enter the case number carefully, and match the party names on screen with your own papers before trusting the result.
  3. Note down three things every time: the next date, the purpose of that date, and the last order passed, and keep them in one diary or phone note in date order.
  4. If the online status and your paper record differ, treat your certified papers and your lawyer's advice as the reliable record, and get the discrepancy checked at the court office.
  5. Before every date, prepare the papers the court is likely to ask for, and after every date, write down in one line what happened and what the court asked you to do next.
  6. Never share your case papers, identity documents or one-time passwords with anyone who contacts you claiming to update your case online, and verify any such message with your lawyer first.

Aadhaar Misuse: Lock, Complain and Correct ·

When it applies: When you suspect someone has used your Aadhaar number, or your Aadhaar details, photograph or mobile number linked to it, are wrong.

  1. First, write down exactly what happened: where the misuse came to light, which service or account was involved, and the date and time you noticed it.
  2. Lock your Aadhaar biometrics through the official Aadhaar services, so that fingerprint or iris authentication cannot be used without your unlocking it first.
  3. Check which mobile number and email are linked to your Aadhaar, and if an unknown number is linked, get it corrected through the official update process with your identity proof.
  4. File a complaint through the official Aadhaar grievance channel, keep the complaint number safe, and save screenshots or copies of every step you took.
  5. If money was lost or an account was opened in your name, inform that bank or service provider in writing at once, ask for the account to be frozen, and keep the written acknowledgement.
  6. For any detail that is wrong on the card itself, such as name, date of birth or address, apply for a correction with the supporting document, and check the updated card before using it again.

Land Record Error: Correcting Your Name and Records ·

When it applies: When your name, your father's name, the area, or the type of land shown in the revenue record does not match your sale deed, inheritance papers or identity documents.

  1. Get a fresh copy of the revenue record and mark every entry that is wrong, and collect the correct paper for each one: sale deed, inheritance order, or identity proof.
  2. Find out which revenue office and which officer deals with corrections for your village or area, and confirm whether your error is a clerical correction or one that needs a formal order.
  3. File a written correction application naming the record, the wrong entry, and the correct entry, attach self-attested copies of your supporting papers, and keep the stamped receipt.
  4. If the office asks for a report from the field staff, follow up on the report date, and check that the report records the facts as they are on the ground, not as they were in the wrong entry.
  5. After the correction order, get a fresh copy of the record and check every corrected entry again, because a correction on paper is complete only when the record itself shows it.
  6. If the correction is refused, ask for the refusal in writing with reasons, and take that written order to a lawyer to decide the next forum, instead of filing a second application on the same facts.

Caste, Income and Domicile Certificates: Apply, Track and Appeal ·

When it applies: When you need a caste, income or domicile certificate for admission, a scholarship, a job, or a government scheme, or when your application has been rejected or delayed.

  1. Before applying, list the exact certificate you need and the purpose, because caste, income and domicile certificates are different documents with different proofs.
  2. Collect the proofs that match your claim: identity proof, address proof, and for caste, the family or parent's certificate or record that shows the same caste, and for income, the income proof for the period asked.
  3. Fill the application with the names and spellings exactly as they appear in your school or identity records, because a spelling mismatch is the most common reason for delay.
  4. Keep the application number and the acknowledgement safe, and track the application on the dates the office gives you, instead of waiting until the last date of admission or the scheme.
  5. If verification is pending, visit the office with your original documents on the date given, and ask the dealing clerk, politely, what paper is still missing, in writing if possible.
  6. If the application is rejected, get the rejection order in writing with reasons, correct only the point mentioned, and file the appeal or fresh application within the time the order itself mentions.

Wrong Electricity or Water Bill and Disconnection: What to Do · गलत बिजली या पानी का बिल और कनेक्शन कटना: क्या करें

When it applies: When your electricity or water bill is far higher than your usual use, shows a wrong meter reading, or when your connection has been disconnected over a disputed bill.

  1. Photograph your meter reading on the day you notice the problem, and compare it with the reading printed on the bill, because the difference between the two readings is the heart of most billing disputes.
  2. Keep your last few bills ready, so you can show your normal monthly use, and mark the month from which the bill suddenly jumped.
  3. Complain in writing to the distribution office, giving the consumer number, the meter readings, and the bills you are disputing, and keep the stamped complaint copy and complaint number.
  4. Pay the undisputed part of the bill if you can, and say so in writing, because paying what is admittedly due keeps your position stronger while the disputed part is examined.
  5. If the office does not resolve the complaint, escalate it in writing to the next grievance level of the utility, attaching your earlier complaint copy and the meter photographs.
  6. If disconnection is threatened over the disputed amount, ask for the notice and the rule relied on in writing, and take both to a lawyer or the consumer forum route without delay, instead of reconnecting the line yourself.
